Widow sold for Rs 11 lakhs by brothers

New Delhi, Dec. 22: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken cognisance of a bizarre incident of a 35-year-old widow, having been allegedly sold by her brothers along with her three daughters and a son to a 68-year-old landlord in Gurgaon, Haryana, for Rs 11 lakh.

The widow, Garima (name changed), managed to escape from the clutches of her brothers with her three-year-old son and filed a complaint with the NCW in Delhi. “We have registered a case and has asked the SSP of Gurgaon to investigate the case. The police has been given 15 days’ time to report back to the Commission. The woman was residing at her parents’ place in a village in Gurgaon where the whole ordeal took place,” NCW spokesperson Romi Sharma said. However, the victim remains scared as her three daughters are still in the custody of her brothers.

“The victim is afraid that her daughters could be harmed and hence the police has been asked to rescue them,” Ms Sharma said. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Garima, who is putting up in the capital with one of her relatives, said, “I was being beaten up by my brothers and their wives and was also forced to go to landlord Ram Pal, who had paid a cash amount of Rs 11 lakh to my brothers.”

“The relative of the victim has confirmed that he had seen Rs 11 lakh cash at the home of her brothers and confirmed the ordeal of the woman,” Ms Sharma pointed out. The ordeal of the widow began in January this year when her husband Rajveer (40) died of a heart attack. Garima was married to Rajveer some 12 years ago and had three daughters aged 11, 9 and 7 and one three-year-old son. Rajveer owned a truck and some property.

During the cremation of her husband, Garims’s five brothers came to her house at Panwla village in Baghpat and assured her that they would take care of her and her children. “My brothers assured me that they would take my proper care. However, they sold all of my husband’s property for Rs 7 lakh and took me to their house in Kherla village in Gurgaon. They behaved well in the first five months, after which, they started abusing and beating me up,” Garima added.

“They then clandestinely sold me to old landlord Ram Pal for Rs 11 lakh. Later, they called the landlord to stay at their house and started forcing me to live with him despite my opposition,” Garima said.
