A young girl found dead on a lakeshore in Kamchatka over the weekend was raped and strangled to death before stray dogs mauled her corpse, prosecutors said Tuesday.
The girl's age was unclear; Interfax said she was 4, while RIA-Novosti said she was 3.
Investigators, who found the body of Ksenia Yegorova early Sunday on the shore of a lake near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, promised to find the killer.
"It could take a day or it could take a year, but we will find this man," said Valery Krivenko, the prosecutor of the Far East city, RIA-Novosti reported.
Krivenko said his department had solved all similar crimes during his tenure.
Krivenko said the girl's father -- whom he did not identify -- might be charged with a misdemeanor for negligence. The father left his daughter in the back seat of his Nissan with the keys in the ignition while he went into a store to buy beer, Interfax reported. He returned to find the car gone. Police found the car on the bank of Lake Medvezhye and the girl's body several hundred meters away.
Fingerprints found on the body showed the girl was strangled, Krivenko said.
Earlier reports said she might have died from hypothermia.
