The SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Health Collective would like to invite you to apply to participate as a plenary speaker or workshop leader for our 10th anniversary national conference on women of color and reproductive justice called Let’s Talk About Sex! The conference will be held May 31- June 2, 2007 in Chicago, Illinois hosted by African American Women Evolving and more than 1,200 people are expected to attend.

Since the right to have sex is a topic rarely discussed when addressing reproductive health and rights issues, SisterSong believes that sexual prohibitions are not only promoted by moral conservatives in this country, but also by reproductive rights advocates who fail to promote a sex-positive culture. Sex is not just for pro-creation and sexual pleasure – it is a human right. We would like to create a pro-sex space for the pro-choice movement and we hope you will join us.

You are invited to submit an abstract proposal for this exciting conference. Abstracts are limited to 500 words in length and must be presented on a single page by December 15, 2006. Instructions for submitting an abstract are found below the potential topics list in the call for papers below. The conference will be organized over a four-day period to include plenaries, workshops, and roundtables. The conference will be conducted in English and Spanish, and abstracts may be submitted in either language. SisterSong offers free technical assistance to activists who are not experienced in submitting abstracts for a conference presentation or in submitting abstracts electronically. Only women of color will invited to be plenary speakers but all people are eligible to be selected as workshop leaders and speakers.

If possible, title your workshop or presentation in an exciting and provocative way. We want to challenge our thinking, engage in stimulating intellectual exchanges, but most of all, we want to have fun! We are considering organizing the conference tracks similar to the movie rating system: G, PG, R, X, and XXX.

SisterSong is a membership-based organization. We invite all organizations and individuals to become members. Proposals from individual and organizational members will be given preference. Information on joining SisterSong is available at www.sistersong.net/join_sistersong.html

SisterSong is also soliciting organizational co-sponsors and individual donors for this important conference. If your organization is interested in becoming a major co-sponsor with special benefits and opportunities for our partners, please contact us at If you are interested in joining SisterSong’s electronic listserv for future announcements, please send an email to

Under the Veil
The Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan

From under their burqas Afghani women took these haunting and disturbing photographs of atrocities committed by the Taliban regime between 1992 and 2001. RAWA was founded in 1977 to fight for human rights and social justice, given the country’s long history of oppressive treatment of women. Violations against the human rights of women and others continue even after the American overthrow of the Taliban in late 2001 and so RAWA’s protests have not ended. See this January 21, 2007 LA Times article.

CAUTION: Several photographs in this exhibition show human death, injury and violence. We advise parents accompany children under 18 years old.

Under the Veil was curated by Tara Farrell of
World Picture Network, New York, with the International Center of Photography, New York, where it was first exhibited during the first anniversary of 9/11 in 2002.

CONVOCATION

The Second International Congress of Islamic Feminism (Barcelona, 3rd, 4th and 5th of November 2006) will focus on major issues with relation to the implementation of sharia and family laws in countries with a Muslim population.

The conference aims to continue the task which was started in the First Congress on Islamic Feminism, through which the growing Muslim women’s movement in pursuit of gender equality became known, on a theoretical as well as a practical level. It also seeks to contribute to the consolidation of Islamic feminism as a international movement.

Nowadays, there are some groups that claim for the implementation of a codification of the Sharia that goes back to the 10th century, and which in practice means corporal punishments, justification of domestic violence against women, dress codes that restrict freedom, highly chauvinistic and discriminatory family laws restricting women’s right to divorce or inheritance or to exercise certain professions.

In front of this situation, Islamic feminism declares that this alleged “Islamic Law” is not “God’s law”, as is claimed by those who promote it, but a human creation codified centuries ago in the context of societies in which women were considered to be the property of men and religious discourse lay in the hands of men. This movement considers that a degradation of Islamic tradition and distortion of the Sacred Text has taken place. Moreover, Islamic feminism affirms that true Islam contains important elements of liberation and calls for the recovery of those elements as a framework for social emancipation.

The Congress has the participation of some of the most outstanding Muslim intellectuals working for gender justice and against sexist interpretations of the Sacred Text. These scholars will analyze the state of women’s human rights in countries like Pakistan, Iran, Morocco, Nigeria and Indonesia.

Some of the fundamental topics that affect the situation of women in the Islamic world will be approached, such as polygamy, abortion, divorce, domestic violence, family planning, sexual rights and the intellectual and spiritual leadership of women. The conference seeks to analyze these topics from the perspective of Islamic Feminism. Various strategies for the improvement of women’s rights will be discussed. Sessions will be devoted to Quranic hermeneutics, inter-religious feminist dialogue, masculinity and the role of men in Islamic Feminism.

The event is organized by the Catalan Islamic Board (Junta Islàmica Catalana), and has the patronage of the Barcelona City Council and the Catalonian Autonomous Government, as well as the support of the Foundation “Pluralismo y Convivencia” (Ministry of Justice).
