International Day for the elimination of violence against women

The Commission is today celebrating the International Day for the elimination of violence against women. Each year, 3 million women in the UK experience a form of violence including domestic violence, forced marriage and rape.

We are currently working with the  Coalition to ensure that victims of violence have access to specialist support services. Last year, we jointly produced the  report which highlighted the serious lack of support for women victims of violence. We are now following this up to see if there has been an improvement over the last year and will be reporting our findings in January 2009. The Commission will also be taking enforcement action against local authorities that have not taken action.
