Dogs eat newborn girl

Hyderabad, Feb. 8: Stray dogs ate a newborn female baby on the road side in Karmanghat on the city outskirts on Wednesday.  The baby was thrown there by unidentified persons and was dead by the time the police reached the spot. The dogs had half-eaten the body at a new colony in the Virat Nagar locality of Karmanghat.  Passerby S. Yugandhar said, “Around 8 am we saw stray dogs eating flesh near Manda Mallamma function hall. Then we found a baby lying there. After driving away the dogs we informed the mobile patrol of the Saidabad police that was going on the road. They took away the body.” The Saidabad police later informed their counterparts at Saroornagar, to whom the area belongs.

Saroornagar inspector M. Chandrashekar said, “We strongly suspect that the baby was alive when she was thrown away by her parents. The body was bleeding when we found it.” Police registered a case against the unknown parents as per Section 317 IPC for endangering the life of an infant.  “After autopsy we can confirm whether it was alive when it was thrown away,” he said. However, forensic doctors did not conduct an autopsy as they hadn’t got police requisition.

Mr Chandrashekar said that the police had requested the forensic department to preserve body tissues for DNA fingerprinting analysis. “In future if we find her parents, we can use the DNA fingerprint to match them with the baby.”

Earlier, Saidabad police (Hyderabad police commissionerate) and Saroornagar police (Cyberabad police commissionerate) were reluctant to take up the case for more than three hours stating that the area doesn’t fall under their jurisdiction. Soon after the body was found, Saidabad police Rakshak team visited the spot and said that the area doesn’t fall under their limits.  The row ended finally and Saroornagar police took up the  case as it falls under their jurisdiction.
